Man killed over witchcraft accusation

Written by  Carren Mumba

Rumphi, July 15, 2020: Angry villagers in Rumphi have killed a 41 year old man whom they accused of bewitching his elder brother's wife, Ella Mhango, who died on 15 June 2020 at Lusimbo area in the district.

Rumphi Police Station Publicist Henry Mnjere said identified the deceased as Alick Mhango from Lusimbo Village in the area of Senior Chief Mwankhunikira in the district.
Mnjere said on 15th June this year Ella Mhango fell down in her garden while watering tomatoes with her husband and died later after receiving treatment at Rumphi District Hospital.

This occurrence did not satisfy family members who decided to invite a witch doctor to determine who was behind the mysterious death of their relative.

"Mhango’s family members felt her death wasn’t natural hence inviting the witch doctor for exorcism. The witch doctor mentioned Alick Mhango (now deceased) as the one who bewitched his brother’s wife. This prompted him to run away,” said Mnjere.

He further said some villagers pursued and caught him before they assaulted him to death.

The matter was reported to Rumphi Police Station where officers together with medical personnel rushed to the place.

Medical report confirmed that Mhango's death was due to severe head injuries sustained from severe beatings at the hands of the mob.

Meanwhile, police are advising residents to refrain from taking the law into their hands saying those perpetrators of the same will held answerable.
