Dowa youth bars its representative from attending full council meetings

Dowa, June 15, 2018: Dowa youth group committee, has accused its representative to the council, Benson Manda, for continuing attending council meetings after his removal from his position.

The group has for several times been questioning Manda for choosing not to speak on issues affecting the youths of the district in council meetings.

In April this year, the group appointed its new representative, Saidi Black to take over from Manda, but in last month's council meet, Black failed to attend after noticing the presence of Manda comfortably seated in the chamber.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency, Black, expressed surprise as to why Manda was still attending council meetings after he was shown the exit that he represents own interests other than those of the youths of the district.

He lamented that Dowa community centre ground would have by now been fenced with brick walls had it been that the youths of the district had a strong representative to the council.

Black said the youths after noticing that their representative was a figurehead to the council and did not know his role, mounted pressure by themselves forcing the council to fulfill the promise made in the 2015/16 financial year priority of the priority projects to benefit from the Mk208 million development fund.

He said the youths erected dried maize stalks as fence for the stadium, but the council didn't listen to them leading to presentation of petitions characterized by peaceful demonstration marches against the council.

Black said the youths angered by Manda's mouth which was sealed with a masking tape in council meetings had no option but to kick him out so that he is no longer their representative.

But, in his response, Manda said he did not receive a letter informing him of his removal saying probably, he will get the letter at the Annual General Meeting where new office bearers will be elected.

The 2015/16 Development Fund had priority projects to be implemented such as drilling boreholes in the seven constituencies of the district, Mponela and Dowa boma Urban Structure Plan, upgrading of Dowa boma rest house to a lodge and the brick wall fence construction project for  Dowa sports stadium.
