Chiradzulu District Council elects new Chair

Chiradzulu, September 18, 2015: Chiradzulu district council has elected new chairperson and vice Chairperson respectively following the mandatory elections which took place recently at the Boma.

The New council chairperson Emmanuel Kamwendo of Ntayamwana ward defeated Franco Kaliya of Thumbwe ward. Councilor Kamwendo got six votes while Councilor Kaliya got four votes. Amoni Samu, councilor for Mombezi ward defeated Alick Nampiyo of Chikowa Ward. Naphiyo got three votes while Samu got seven votes.

Chiradzulu District council is composed of 10 wards. Kaliya and Naphiyo were running for the second term.

The elections were conducted following the expiry of term of office for councilors which runs for a period of one year according to Local Government Act.

In his maiden speech, Councilor Kamwendo thanked his fellow councilors for entrusting him with the responsibility leading the council.

“During my term I will work for the benefit of the whole district. I will ensure that development projects are distributed evenly across the district,’ said Councilor Kamwendo adding that he will also ensure that cordial working relationship between councilors and the secretariat prevails in the district.

Recently, councilors have been calling for the removal of acting Director of Planning and Development (DPD) Morson Magombo. Last year, the councilors pressed for the removal of the then District Commissioner James Manyetera who was eventually replaced by Ali Phiri.
