Zomba City elects Melia Douglas new Mayor

Zomba September 15, 2015: Zomba City Council on Tuesday elected Melia Douglas as the new mayor replacing the late Joan Ntaja.

Douglas is a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Ward Councillor for Zomba Central ward and she was elected unopposed.

The 37 year old woman who had just won as a Councillor in the just ended Local Government by-elections, while expressing her excitement thanked God for choosing her to become the new mayor to serve people in the city.

Councillor Douglas promised in an interview to continue where her fellow woman Mayor, late Joana Ntaja left in terms of development activities like maintenance and construction of roads and expects to fulfill her promises she made during campaign period such as sanitation and improvement of Zomba Community Centre Ground.

Zomba City Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) for Peoples Party (PP), Patricia Kainga Nangozo, said she was very grateful for the city to have a woman elected for the second time as a mayor which she said is good news to those who support gender issues.

Nangozo also promised to support the newly elected mayor and work hand in hand with her in order to make issues of development in the city move forward.

Zomba First Grade Magistrate Robert Makaika administered the oath of office to Douglas.
