MJ DHO geared to reduce maternal deaths

MULANJE, December 12, 2017: Mulanje District's Health Office (DHO) has embarked on different safe motherhood interventions in a quest to reduce maternal deaths.

Mulanje DHO Safe Motherhood Coordinator Enellie Mhango said in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Wednesday.

“The district recorded a total of 29 maternal deaths in 2015-2016 financial year and this was a wakeup call as since then, interventions towards reduction of such cases were intensified in the district and they were reduced to 13 cases the following year,” said Mhango.

She said among other things, shortage of blood and lack of proper post abortal care perpetuated the increase of maternal deaths in the district.

"The increased cases we registered in 2015-2016 financial year indeed shook us a bit and we have since deployed several interventions targeted to reduce maternal deaths in the district. So far we see that it is working and hopefully we will be able to reach our intended target and even beyond during this financial year", explained Mhango.

Mhango added that to achieve their targets, the DHO was engaging the communities through door to door campaigns whereby all pregnant women are followed up in their respective homes until they have given birth apart from their normal hospital visits. T

They are also conducting time to time capacity building trainings to health personnel’s in the district to make sure they are well informed about what is expected of them in their places of duty at all times.

However, she said lack of funding remains a big challenge as currently there is only one partner supporting safe motherhood initiatives in the district.
