Phalombe, May 18, 2020: Ufulu Wathu Community Based Organisation (CBO) in Phalombe on Saturday made a donation of hand washing materials to less privileged households and small scale businesses in a bid to prevent spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) in the district.

Director of the CBO, George Kulangu said with assistance from Action Aid Malawi, the group decided to bail out the less privileged considering that if the virus reached Phalombe district it would find a breeding ground in those that cannot afford sanitary materials.

“There are a lot of households in the villages that cannot afford a hand washing bucket and soap whereby some of the people conducting small scale businesses cannot prioritise hand washing;  thereby, putting their customers at risk; hence, our decision to supply the materials,” said Kulangu.

The CBO donated 560 buckets with taps and tablets of soap to barbershops, small scale fast food sellers and ultra-poor households from the area of Traditional Authorities (TAs) Nazombe and Nkhulambe.

Coordinator for Ufulu Wathu CBO, Symon Thipa called on partners to work with the organization in reaching out to poor households in the fight against the novel coronavirus.

One of the beneficiaries a mandasi seller, Idah Likatcha said the donation was timely considering that people were nowadays avoiding buying food where there was no hand washing facilities.
