Mangochi, August 25, 2015: Police in Mangochi have arrested two men for allegedly killing an 80 year old man through mob justice, Malawi News Agency has learnt.

The crime of murder, which is contrary to section 209 of the penal code attracts a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Rodrick Maida has identified the two suspects as Afiya Jefule, 24 and Bernard Masauko, 18 both from Matenganya village in the area of Traditional Authority Chowe in the district.

Maida told Mana on Monday that the deceased identified as Chiwonda Ajibu, 80 of the same village as the suspects had a sight problem and that on the particular night went out to relieve himself outside his house before meeting his fate.

“On Sunday, August 23 at about 2am in Matenganya village the deceased went out of his house to urinate in his birth suit. On his way back, he lost direction and was seen at the house of the two who feared that he could either be a wizard or a thief,” Maida said.

Maida said the two immediately began to assault the unsuspecting old man despite indicating that he had lost direction due to his poor sight.

He added that the old man was later taken to Chowe Police Unit where he was further referred to Chowe Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to Maida this is the second case of mob justice in the month of August. Two lives have been lost.

Meanwhile, Mangochi Police Station is urging people in the district to avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that no one is above the law.
