Balaka, September 18, 2019: At least 1, 250 vulnerable are expected to benefit from ultra-poor graduation project that is being implemented by Eagle Relief in Balaka.

The Project which will run for three years seeks to improve the standard of living and ensure self-reliance among communities in four Traditional Authorities of Nkaya, Amidu, Kalembo and Nsamala in the district.

Eagle Relief Project Coordinator, Osborne Nyirongo told Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Tuesday in Blantyre that his Organization has come up with the project to assist vulnerable households in the district.

“We will work jointly with the District Social Welfare Office in identifying prospective beneficiaries for the project to achieve its intended objectives,’’ he said.

Nyirongo expressed optimism that the project would address some of the challenges that the vulnerable have been facing in the district such as poverty and climate change, among others.

“Since we have taken note of some of the challenges, we are planning to empower communities to engage into small scale businesses to be self-reliant at household level,’’ he added.

The Project Coordinator urged communities in the district to utilize the project in an attempt to improve their well-being as well as developing their respective areas.

The Project which in total will graduate 3, 300 households from ultra-poverty in Balaka and Machinga is being implemented under the consortium of OXFAM, Christian Aid and Government.
