Chitipa, April 18, 2019: Miserior, a development cooperation for the German Catholic Bishops, has commended Catholic Development Commission (CADECOM) in Malawi for offering hope to the jobless youth in Chitipa through vocational training.

Miserior Country Officer, Thorsten Jergus, made the commendation Wednesday during a graduation ceremony of thirty young people who were trained in tailoring, carpentry and brick laying at Nkhangwa Village in Traditional Authority Mwaulambya in Chitipa.

He said the four- month training by Karonga Diocese through CADECOM’s Integrated Rural Development project has improved livelihoods of the youth who were just staying idle.

“I am very impressed with the intervention as it has addressed the needs of the unemployed youth who did not go further with their secondary school education.

“The training has equipped them with skills that are required for them to make a living afterwards,” said Jergus.

He said Miserior will increase funding towards the project in order to help more youth with tools like sewing machines and tool boxes for their work.

CADECOM Coordinator, Mwabi Shaba, told Malawi News Agency (Mana) the training rolled out in August to December, 2018.

He said 125 graduated out of the targeted 160 youth from Chisenga, Misuku and Nkhangwa in Chitipa.

The training was facilitated by Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) instructors from Lufita Technical College in Chitipa.

One of the youth who graduated in carpentry, Godfrey Mtambo, said the training was a great opportunity which had enabled him to establish his own workshop in his village.

“The training has changed my life for the better as I was just staying at home, but now I am able to do work like crafting beds, tables and coffins, which I sell to generate income for myself,” he explained.

In her speech during the graduation, Chitipa District Youth Officer, Jessy Mwansambo commended CADECOM for empowering the youth in the district and emphasized on the need for continued support towards them, saying it was the right way in developing the nation.
