Angry villagers vandalise school in Mulanje

MULANJE, November 18, 2017: Angry villagers at Limbuli in Mulanje on Friday vandalized and damaged Mitawa 1 Primary School.

The villagers are said to have vandalised the school in protest against the School's head teacher who, alongside other teachers, are being accused of practicing Satanism.

According to information gathered by Malawi News Agency, (MANA), the whole fracas started after some three girls fainted while attending classes at the school.

Commenting on the development, Mulanje District Education Manager (DEM) Gosam Mafuta said everything at the school has been damaged and it has since been closed indefinitely.

However, Mafuta refuted media reports that have been circulating saying about 14 pupils fainted saying it was only three and one of them was a known epileptic.

“It is true the school has been closed after some people from surrounding villages vandalized and destroyed all school property for alleged practices of Satanism which they connect to fainting of school children,” Mafuta said.

The DEM bemoaned the conduct of the villagers saying such behavior is uncalled for and unacceptable adding that it will take time and a lot of financial resources to fix their damages.

Meanwhile, education authorities in the district have since transferred the head teacher for the school Hilda Matemba and her family in fear of the angry people.

A police officer is said to have been injured during the fracas but Mulanje Police Station Public Relations Officer Gresham Ngwira could not give more details on the matter.
