Rumphi, December 10, 2018: Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum in Rumphi has urged government to put more resources in public primary schools for the country to achieve equity and quality education.

The forum (CKWF)’s Executive Director, Tiwonge Gondwe said this Friday when her organization handed over a classroom block worth over K15 million to the Ministry of Education at Kapirinjowera Primary School in the district.

Gondwe said the quality of education is dwindling in the district because most public schools have inadequate resources.

“It is true that literacy rate is highest in Rumphi but it is going down,” she said, adding that most pupils with access to quality education come from rich families and learn in private schools.

“Nowadays, it is only those children in private primary schools that can attain quality education. Those from rural areas are subjected to several challenges and accessing quality education is not easy,” she said.

“It is my sincere appeal to government to consider investing more resources to Ministry of Education so that rural primary schools such as Kapirinjowera can have access to quality education,” she said.

Rumphi District Education Manager (DEM), Mac Phine Mzumara acknowledged that most pupils in rural primary schools are denied quality education due to shortage of resources.

“It is true that we do not have adequate resources in most primary schools although government is trying to share the available resources to all the schools in the country.

“We rely on our partners such as Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum to support us in providing quality education,” Mzumara said.

Mzumara, therefore hailed Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum for the classroom school block at which he said will assist in the provision of quality education to learners.

“Let me thank Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum and Action aid for constructing a school block at this school.

“I should also extend my appeal to other stakeholders working in the education sector that they too should emulate a good example that Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum has demonstrated today,” he said.

The classroom block, worth K15.9 million, has been constructed with funding from Action aid Malawi.

CKWF is a non-governmental organization which advocates for girl child and women’s rights in Rumphi District.
