Blantyre, June 5, 2017: Blantyre District Council on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Blantyre District Civil Society Organizations Network (BDCSON) to help track and accomplish development projects in the district.

In her remarks, BDCSON Chairperson, Linnah Matanya promised to support and collaborate with government as the two parties implement different projects in the district.

“Our job is not to work in isolation. We also need the support of the council so that we work in a productive environment that is supportive and our projects for the betterment of the communities,” said Matanya.

Moreover, she said councilors have a big role in monitoring organizations working in their areas so that there is no duplication of projects and that hard to reach areas are covered as well.

Representing the Council, Chairman of Blantyre District Council, Councilor Tawanda Tambula said Civil Society Organizations (CSO) are welcome to the council at any time and assured them of all the council’s necessary support.

“We are glad that we have this MoU since it will help strengthen our working relationship for the good of our communities,” said Tambula.

Among other things highlighted in the MoU, CSOs have promised to be: non-partisan; to only place skilled and qualified personnel to work in communities; to never create independent project structures and ensure the implementation of sustainable activities that have a proper exit strategy.

On its part, Blantyre District Council through the MoU is obligated to: screen projects of BDSON; provide technical and relevant policy guidance and provide a smooth operating environment for CSOs.
