Fear of foot and mouth disease outbreak grips Nsanje

Blantyre, July 13, 2018: Fear has gripped animal farmers and people in Nsanje amid speculations of an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

FMD is a severe, highly contagious viral disease that causes illness in cows, pigs, sheep, goats, deer, and other animals with divided hooves.

In an interview with Chenjerani Chiwambo who is one of the lead animal farmers in Nsanje the fear of another FMD outbreak in the district has emerged after a number of cattle and goats started showing signs of the disease.

“The previous FMD which attacked our district was very acute but we managed to contain it with the help of Shire Valley ADD. It seems the FMD has resurfaced for instance a number of my cattle and that of my friends who are into similar farming have developed symptoms of Foot and Mouth Disease,” Chiwambo said.

However, Shire Valley ADD Animal Health and Livestock Development Officer, Edwin Nkhulungu said the ADD has sent samples to Botswana for tests on the possibility of resurfacing of the outbreak.

“The report from Botswana will determine the true stand of whether there is indeed an outbreak of FMD in Nsanje or not. Besides, our headquarters in Lilongwe will be eligible to announce that to the public,” he said.

In a related development, Blantyre ADD is yet to lift a ban on the travelling and selling of animals like cattle and goats in Blantyre, Chiradzulo, Balaka, Mulanje and Thyolo after confirmed reports of FMD in the ADD.
