Nsanje, July 10, 2018: Shortage of food at Nsanje Prison is said to be a thing of the past after realising bumper harvest following the use of irrigation agriculture along the Shire River.

Nsanje Prison Officer In-charge, Superintendent Charles Nyangu said the prison is now food secure as inmates are able to grow crops at least three times in one season which has improved the prison’s food stock.

“Although the prison receives some funds from government to buy food, it does not meet the demand considering that the monthly funding is always low. This is why we decided to start irrigation farming to supplement the shortage,” he said.

Nyangu said since they started running the irrigation scheme, things have improved at the facility as food shortage is now past history. He said this has assisted the institution to allocate the funds meant for food to other areas that need improvement.

“Where there are many people such as the prison, expenditure cannot be on food alone, so the resources we receive are directed to other areas like health, reformation and buying other necessities.

We are able to cover those areas easily because we cultivate our own crops,” Nyangu said.

On future plans, the prison officer in charge disclosed that they intend to extend the irrigation scheme to increase produce some of which could be sold out.

Nyangu, however, asked well-wishers to keep on supporting the prison in various areas such as maintenance of the prison so that the institution can provide better reformation services.

Some of the crops grown at Nsanje Prison irrigation scheme include; maize, rice and different vegetables.
