Mchinji farmers get hybrid seeds for winter cropping

Lilongwe, June 20: A local seed manufacturing company, Peacock Seeds, donated hybrid maize seed to fifty farmers in Nchinji district on Monday to enable them do winter cropping in a bid to make them economically stable and mitigate the effects of adverse weather conditions.

The farmers, drawn from Chioshya Extension Planning Area (EPA), were given Peacock 10, a variety that is drought tolerant, resistant to common diseases and pests, high yielding and early maturing, according to Corporate Affairs Officer for the company, Chris Loka.

He said Peacock Seeds saw the need to help so as to bail out the farming communities from hunger that has affected many due to dry spells experienced during the last growing season.

“Government, through a number of projects and initiatives, is implementing bridging programs for farmers that were affected by dry spells and floods in many parts of the country.

As a local company, with direct linkages to a number of farming communities, we took advantage of that to support the smallholder farmers with winter cropping seed so that they are able to supplement on food and income security,” explained Loka.

He said Peacock Seeds has three more drought tolerant hybrid maize varieties including Peacock 30, Peacock 33 and CAP9001 which it is distributing across the country through a number of outlets.

Chioshya Agricultural Extension and Development Officer (AEDO), Michael Phiri, hailed Peacock Seeds for the donation.

“We thank Peacock Seeds for coming to our rescue as you are aware that most of the farmers would have not managed to buy the seed. We don’t take this donation for granted and this will go a long way serving a lot of households”, said Phiri.

Loka encouraged the farmers to take care of the seed so that they realize high yields and improve their livelihoods.
