Lilongwe, June 2, 2015: Lilongwe University of Science and Technology (LUANAR) first year students in Veterinary medicine are on a ten day long training which is expected to equip them with fundamentals of veterinary practice in domesticated animals among others.

The training has been organised by the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) in conjunction with Vets United (WTG) an animal welfare charity with an international focus.

Speaking Monday at the training’s official opening, Dean of faculty of Agriculture Dr. Patsani Kumambala said training was a step ahead in helping the students become experts in animal health in their five year long course.

“The veterinary Medicine program has just been introduced and hence, we are yet to have facilities suitable for the students. Therefore, the training will help them become experts in their field of study,” said Kumambala.

Chief Animal Health Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Julius Chulu said “the industry is on high demand, it has now grown and we need professionals. As a country we have no veterinary schools and students have been travelling to other countries like Zamiba and Australia to get such king of training,” said Chulu.

The course will also equip the students in rabies control, veterinary ethics and dog population management among other areas of specialization.

It will also include theory and laboratory sessions including practicals to enable the students gain hands on experience on animal welfare related issues. The students will be involved in various community works to sharpen their skills with the experts while benefiting the communities to whom they are trained to serve.

Project Manager for WTG Dr. Ruprecht Herbst said the training will uplift the profile of animal welfare issues for both students and various institutions they will work for in the future.
