6 year IHL for illegal possession of firearm and ammunitions

Lilongwe, September 12: The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court on 8th September slapped 32 year old Gracious Nzunga with a 6 year prison sentence for illegal possession of firearm and ammunitions.

Central region police Public Relations Officer, Nolliettie Chihana told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the court heard through the state prosecutor, Sub Inspector Jones Chikonde that on 26th March, 2017, Midian a soldier at the Kamuzu Barracks learnt that her sister was being trailed by some three people who were believed to be robbers.

It was also reported that the suspects were using a motor vehicle Toyota Corolla, silver in color registration number MH3598.

“In reaction, together with his military fellow, Midian drove around the city to trace the suspects until they were found near Maimba building which is within the location of Area 18 market. In the process of interrogating them, the two suspects bolted but one got arrested,” said Chihana.

Chihana further explained that a browning pistol with seven rounds of ammunitions was found inside the car after a search. The matter was then taken to Lingadzi Police where further investigation revealed that the suspect possessed the firearm and ammunitions without license.

When passing the sentence, the Senior Resident Magistrate, Chisomo Msokera slapped Nzunga with 6 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour for illegal possession of the firearm which contradicts Section 16 of the Firearms Act.

The convict also got five months IHL for illegal possession of ammunitions which contradicts Section 12 (1) of the Firearms Act.

Gracious Nzunga hails from Sandama village, Traditional Authority Nsabwe, in Thyolo district.
