2 Men in custody for theft and defilement

THYOLO, September 12: A 24 year old man in Thyolo is appearing before Thyolo magistrate court for attempting to steal a motorcycle which the owner parked outside a bar near Thyolo main market.

According to Thyolo police documents, the incident happened on 9th July 2017 at around 7pm, when the suspect ,Jackson Khoviwa, from Kalilombe village  in Traditional Authority Mthiramanja in the district,  went closer to the motorcycle of Sosten  Alfred, put on a crush helmet and tried to kick start it.

The police said as Khoviwa was busy trying to kick start it when the owner came out of the bar and confronted him.

"He did not run away instead he started fighting the owner. Fortunately the owner with friends, who had come to help him, overpowered the suspect," read police charge sheet.

The suspect was then taken to police where he was charged with attempted motorbike theft, but Jackson pleaded not guilty in court.

The case is still in court waiting for prosecutors to present more state witnesses.

On same development, Charles Golden, 40,  of Mpiyama village in Traditional Authority Mchiramwera in  Thyolo is appearing in same court for defiling an underage claiming he had consent from her mother.

Police charge sheets indicates that Golden had been sleeping with the minor since 2016 and it was only discovered in August 2017.
The suspect admitted to the case saying the girl was offered to him by her mother.

Flora Mayesa, mother to the girl, in her statement denied having offered the girl to Golden, but said the suspect used to bring a lot of gifts like soap and lotions to her not knowing what was going on with her daughter.

However to the surprise of police prosecutors, the mother could not turn up to testify against the suspect on Monday.
The court has since adjourned the case to a later date for the state to parade witnesses for the case.
