Under aged children should not be registered as voters

Mzimba, May 4, 2020:Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri has urged parents against allowing their children who are under aged to get registered in readiness for July 2  fresh presidential  election.

He was speaking Saturday at Jaji village in the area of Senior Chief Kaluluma in Kasungu District at the funeral ceremony of late Thomas Chirwa who was the District Commissioner for M’mbelwa District Council.

He made the remarks following allegations by different political parties  are using some voter registration workers in some centre are registering under aged children so that they vote in the fresh election.

"Parents don't allow our children to get registered with intention to participate in election. It was surprising to note that some people who have not attained the age of 18  are alleged to have been registered in some voter registration centres," Phiri explained.

The Minister said children cannot make informed decisions in the electoral and voting processes.

Phiri took advantage of the gathering to condemn political hate speeches, saying such speeches could lead to tribalism in the country.

"Let me urge all Malawians to love one another for continues unity among us all. Don't listen hate speeches will only derail the country’s development? These barbaric acts have in some cases led to killing of innocent people,” he warned.
 
The Minister said politicians display characters as they if they are enemies to others with political descent views.

“Despite having different political allegiance, politicians are friends as they drink tea together when they meet at parliament and other places as such I advise fellow politicians to carriers of messages of peace amongst our followers,” he said
