LCC Independence celebrations pegged at K20 million

Lilongwe, June 27,2018. Lilongwe City Council (LCC) is set to host its independence celebrations to mark 54th years of independence at the eve of the day.

Chairperson of the organizing committee, for the Lilongwe City Independence Day celebrations, Stallichi Mwambiwa disclosed this Malawi News Agency on Thursday at Civic Offices in an interview.

He said the planned activities for independence celebration are budgeted to K 20 million and the Council is appealing to well wishers to come forwards and support it.

“We will take a small percentage in this budget, but let me thank all those who have committed their financial support towards this good course as we appeal for more assistance,” Mwambiwa pointed out.

He said the event would be conducted on July 5, 2018 and all city residents are requested patronize it saying it’s a rare one that is meant to remind Malawians of their independence.

“We are going to conduct our celebrations in a very special way. This follows the directive by government that the four many city councils of Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe should organize these special events prior to the main event slated for July 6, to be held in Mzuzu.

“LCC will hold its independence celebrations in a very unique way, because it will start with military parade from Lilongwe Community ground to Bingu National Stadium through Kamuzu procession Road, where several activities will be conducted to mark the celebrations,” he added.

Mwambiwa who is also Acting Director of Administration for the Council said this event is one of the most key activities that LCC has lined up besides December 31 which would be another busy and happy day.

He said the event would reach it climax at midnight where ‘heavy fireworks’ would fired   and residents would be treated to a bash from 6 pm till dawn.

“We have engaged the youth, like primary school pupils to impart in them a spirit of belonging to their independence which has not been the case before. They will partake in several ways like reciting poems and others,” the Chair explained.
