Balaka, December 5: Police in Balaka are keeping in custody a 36 year old man for allegedly inciting violence at Balaka Stadium.

The blue clad suspect, identified as Kenneth Munthali, was nabbed at VIP entrance attempting to provoke the opposing team by using abusive words in a football match involving Be forward Wanderers and Dwangwa United.

Confirming the development on Monday with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Superintendent Aggrey Khonje of Balaka Police said the arrest came as one way of ensuring order at the stadium.

“As you know football attracts many people from all corners of the country, hence it is our responsibility as law enforcers to arrest those who are trying to spoil the match,” he said.

According to Khonje, the suspect, who is believed to be a Be forward Wanderers supporter, hails from Njelenje Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala, Balaka.

He is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of attempting to incite violence at a football match.

The match ended 3-2 in favour of Be forward Wanderers with goals from Jafallie Chande, Isaac Kaliati and Joseph Kamwendo with Hassan Yasin scoring the consolation goals for Dwangwa United.
