Senior Priest Fr Mvonye of BT Archdiocese dies

Blantyre, December 19, 2018: Death has been announced of Reverend Father Montfort Mvonye who was the most senior priest in the Catholic Archdiocese of Blantyre.

According to a statement signed by Blantyre Archdiocese Communications Office, the late Fr Mvonye passed on in the afternoon of Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Adventist Hospital in the district.

“He was born on February 10, 1935 at Ntiana Village, Traditional Authority Nkalo in Chiradzulu District before going to Nankhunda Minor Seminary. He then joined Kachebere Major Seminary in Mchinji in 1958 where he studied philosophy.

“He later joined St. Peter’s Senior Major Seminary in Zomba where he studied theology. He also studied in Uganda,” the statement says.

Mvonye was ordained a priest by the late Archbishop James Chiona on August 29, 1965 at Limbe Cathedral.

During his priesthood, Fr Mvonye served at Mwanza Parish, Bangwe Parish, Nguludi, Lirangwe, Mzedi, January, Neno, Mwanza, Chisitu,  and Chingadzi.

He also served at Mloza, Kadikira and he has died as Spiritual Director at Pius XII Seminary until 2001.

According to a funeral programme, the body of Fr Mvonye will be taken from the College of Medicine at 3.30 pm today (Monday) to Limbe Cathedral where a mass and vigil prayers will be held from 5 pm.

The burial ceremony, which will take place Tuesday at Limbe Cathedral Cemetery, will be preceded by a requiem mass starting at 10 am.
