Blantyre, February 11, 2019: The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has denied sealing a bid for aspiring presidential candidate, Rasta Chikomeni David Chirwa for failing to meet some requirements set by the electoral body.

Speaking at the presentation of presidential nomination papers at Chichiri International Conference Centre, popularly known as Comesa Hall, MEC Chairperson, Dr. Jane Ansah said Rasta Chikomeni did not meet two requirements.

Ansah said the aspiring presidential candidate failed to pay the K2 million nomination fee and 19 of the nomination papers were not signed by the nominators in each of the country’s districts.

“Section 45 (i) reads that at the same time the nomination paper for a candidate is lodged, there shall be deposited such a sum as may be determined by the commission which shall not be refundable with a returning officer,” Ansah said.

Ansah added: “There are not enough nominators for nine districts. You are required to have a minimum of 10 signatures from each district and nine have not been filled. Therefore, the commission will not receive the nomination papers.”

However, Ansah said the commission would accept the nomination papers for Ras Chikomeni if the candidate meets the two conditions within the next two days.

Meanwhile, Ningah Chiyambe, Aide for Rasta Chikomeni said the money is already available and that the team would come back within the specified period with the money and also the required nine signatures from people in each district.

“There are already some people who pledged to provide the money, but it’s only that they did not take the time seriously. But I will talk with my president to find out from him how far this thing has gone,” Chiyambe said.
