LSPCA donates veterinary manual books to LUANAR students

Lilongwe, February 9: Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) on Wednesday donated Merck veterinary manual books to Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) as one way of promoting veterinary education in Malawi.

A Merck veterinary manual book is a veterinary medical encyclopedia that is used by most veterinary students worldwide as a reference material in their studies.

The donation comes under LSPCA’s Vets United Programme, a unique training platform which offers veterinary practical skills to students studying veterinary medicine at LUANAR.

LSPCA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with LUANAR to train local veterinary students and veterinary assistants from Bunda College and Natural Resource College (NRC) campuses every year through delivery of sound and strategic veterinary practical lessons.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) at LUANAR-Bunda Campus in Lilongwe, LSPCA Programmes Director, Lieza Swennen said it was a step ahead in helping the veterinary students become animal health professionals in their five year long course.

“We believe that education is crucial in bringing about meaningful change in the way animals are treated.

“Together with others, we are building the veterinary sector in Malawi, at the same time promoting the good health of animals” said Lieza Swennen.

Over a year now, LSPCA has been coordinating and providing early clinical induction programmes to LUANAR students at urban and rural farm clinics, to stimulate them to provide veterinary assistance in a real life situation in villages that surround the college campus.

“We are developing new pathways for veterinary and animal welfare training through open and distance learning platforms to bridge the gap in proving care to farm animals as well as pets,” added the Programmes Director.

Vice Chancellor of LUANAR, Prof. George Kanyama Phiri acknowledged the receipt of veterinary manuals and commended LSPCA for the generosity towards the college.

“We are very grateful to Merck from United States of America (USA) and LSPCA for donating the veterinary manuals and recognizing our new veterinary school here at LUANAR.

“It is my sincere hope that the students will use these manuals in their day to day studies and perform much better in their professional studies,” said the Vice Chancellor.

President of LUANAR Veterinary Association (LUSVA), Gift Mkanthama also conveyed a message of gratitude to LSPCA for the donation which he said would help them in their profession as veterinary students before and after their graduation.

“We thank LSPCA together with WTG-Germany for various things they are doing to us such as organizing veterinary trainings and practical lessons which are very important to our veterinary profession.

“We look forward to your continued love, support and care and also to link us with different international animal organizations,” appealed Mkanthama.

LUANAR’s Veterinary program which started in October 2014 has recently been credited by National Council for High Education (NCHE), and will first batch its Veterinary graduates next year in 2019.
