Thyolo, February 21:  As one way of ensuring that youths have access to health care services, Thyolo District Hospital will establish a Teen Corner where youths will interact and access a variety of health services.

Thyolo District Youth Friendly Health Service (YFHS) coordinator Dorothy Koloviko told Mana on Thursday that the initiative follows revelations that many youths in the district are absorbed in risky behaviors.

“We thought of introducing the teen corner as one way of wooing many youths to start visiting the hospital and access health care services on top of interacting with fellow teens,” Koloviko said.

According to Koloviko, the youths engage in multiple sexual partnerships which expose them to sexually transmitted diseases.

Koloviko thus said the Teen Corner is designed to attract more youths and accords them an opportunity to receive guidance and counseling from specialised experts.

“Apart from enjoying themselves, the youths will have a chance to interact with specialized experts who will be guiding and counseling them in issues that affect them in their daily living,” added Koloviko.

Among others, the facility will have a recreation area and a library to stock books, magazines and pamphlets of all kinds.

At the moment, Thyolo has three teen clubs at Thyolo, Bvumbwe and Thekerani but plans are underway to have 26 teen clubs, according to Koloviko.
