Chikwawa, February 8, 2018: A 27 year old man in Chikwawa identified as Samuel Chakuamba has killed himself after being reprimanded to stop drinking beer by his parents.

Chakuamba, according to Chikwawa Police Public Relations Officer Constable Foster Benjamin, hanged himself between the night of 6 and 7 February in Mandere Village in the area of Traditional Authority Ngabu in the district.

Benjamin told Malawi News Agency that on Wednesday morning, the deceased reportedly arrived home totally intoxicated and started swearing at his parents.

“He went on to inform his parents and relatives that he was going to kill himself on that particular night,” explained Benjamin.

There are also reports the deceased had once attempted to commit suicide in the past but was quickly rescued by his parents, according to the police.

Benjamin said on that particular day, as the family went to bed, Samuel reportedly sneaked back into his house and picked a nylon rope and hanged himself just 500 metres away from his parents’ home.

“He was discovered dead in the morning of Wednesday,” confirmed the police publicist.

Police and the medical personnel went to the scene and later conducted a postmortem which revealed that the deceased had died of strangulation.

Meanwhile, police are advising the public to desist from taking their own lives when they face problems, but should rather seek help from relevant people or report to authorities for help.
