Mulanje man arrested for defiling 10 year-old girl

Mulanje, October 10, 2017: Police in Mulanje are keeping in custody a 24 year old man for allegedly defiling a 10 year old girl.

The police identified the man as Joseph Jafali who hails from Matuta village, in the area of Traditional Authority Nkanda in the district.

Mulanje Police Publicist Sergeant Gresham Ngwira disclosed that the incident happened in August, 2017 as the victim was escorting her friend to draw water from a nearby borehole.

He said the suspect dragged the girl into his house leaving the friend behind and defiled her and promised to give the two girls K1, 500, 00.

According to Ngwira, the issue was reported to Nkando police, weeks later by the victim’s grandmother who noticed that she was having difficulties to move around the house.

Mulanje district hospital conducted medical examination where it was confirmed that the girls was defiled.

"We are indeed keeping a 24 year old man and has since been charged with a defilement which is contrary to section 138 of the penal code and he is currently awaiting trial," Ngwira revealed.

Following the incident, the Police are appealing to parents and guardians to closely monitor their girl children especially during odd hours in order to protect them such incidences.
