Blantyre, July 17, 2017: The Mulanje First Grade Magistrate Court on Friday sentenced 28 year old  Rafffik Brown to 78 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for  theft.

Mulanje Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Gresham Ngwira told the Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Sunday that the  court heard on Friday that on June 6 2017, the convict tried to steal money amounting to K150,000 belonging to Mr. Steven Sakwata of Limbuli Trading Centre in the district.

"According to Sakwata, on the said day, one of his workers called informing him that he had sent K100,000 through his Telkom Networks Malawi (TNM) Mpamba Account as instructed. This made Sakwata become suspicious because he had not made any such instructions. He, therefore, called customer care personnel who redeemed the money before the suspect transfered it from the fake number to another one," said Ngwira.

Ngwira said the court also heard that on July 11, 2017, the accused went to Mr. Pharaoh Phiri's shop at Mwanakhu Trading Centre where he asked the saleslady to assist him with phone numbers for her boss.

"Two days later, on July 13, the lady received a message from an  Airtel number belonging to her boss instructing her to give K400,000 to someone he (the boss) had sent to the shop. According to the message, it was like there was a business transaction between Mr Pharaoh and Raffik," said Ngwira.

Some minutes later Raffik, hurried into the shop and collected the said amount.

Ngwira further said that when the lady called her boss on a TNM number informing him about the transaction, he was ignorant about the matter suggesting to the lady that she had just been duped.

Days later, the lady, assisted by other people, apprehended Brown and handed him over to Chisitu Police Unit where a case was opened.

Meanwhile, about K360,000 was recovered.

The Publicist said in submission, Mulanje Police Prosecution Officer, Assistant Superintendent Davison Banda, asked the court to give Brown a stiff sentence saying from the two situations, the accused proved dangerous.

Passing his judgement, His Worship Smart Maruwasa agreed with the state saying the accused had indeed shown that he is a crook and deserved a stiff penalty to deter would- be- offenders therefore sentenced him to18 months and 60 months IHL for the two  offences of attempted theft and theft respectively.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Brown, comes from Chakachadza Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaphuka in Dedza.
