Abandoned wife seeks support from social welfare office

Mwanza, August 3, 2019: A45-year-old woman identified as Dyna Yusuf and her three children aged six, five and two have been rendered destitute in Mwanza District after her husband abandoned them following marital disputes.

Malawi News Agency (Mana) has independently established that the husband has run away to Mozambique.

In an interview Friday, Yusuf said there have been some differences on marriage issues since she was married to the man about six years ago.

“On Wednesday this week, he threw out all my belongings then locked up the house and disappeared, leaving me with three children without food,” Yusuf said.

She reported the matter to Village Head Mchotseni under Senior Chief Kanduku where the family has been living in a rented house for the past six years.

Yusuf said her husband, Tchalifu Mbungu, had never taken her to his home village since they got married.

She said Mchotseni told her that he had received reports that her husband had ran away to Mozambique.

Yusuf further said she then took the matter to Mwanza Police Station’s victim support unit where she was advised to report the issue to social welfare office in the district.

Mwanza District assistant social welfare officer Victor Julius said the office is working to link up the woman with her relatives in Mangochi.

“We are looking for relatives of the woman so that they can trace her home village where she left about six years ago,” Julius said.

Julius has since advised women in the district against getting married to strangers to avoid such consequences.
