Karonga, July 17, 2017: Save the Children has embarked on a humanitarian assistance programme to the tune of K527 million in Karonga District to break down the cycle of disaster that occurs every year.

Speaking to Karonga District Executive Committee (DEC) on Thursday, Senior Manager for Humanitarian Operations, Steve Kamtimaleka, said the programme which is funded by Department for International Development (DFID) aims at addressing climate change and strengthening resilience of flood affected households.

He said 16, 500 people in the areas of Traditional Authorities (TAs) Mwakaboko and Kilupula will be empowered in irrigation farming apart from having access to cash transfers and food.

Kamtimaleka said the programme is a continuation of the 2016/ 2017 humanitarian response that was conducted nationwide.

“We want to strengthen resilience of communities to cope up with and adapt to shocks by empowering them economically. Some individuals will get conditional cash transfer of K21, 300 per month, per household, while others will get food, depending on their vulnerability,” Kamtimaleka said.

He said 35 per cent of the beneficiaries are those who did not benefit from the previous response but are still vulnerable and 20 per cent of those that were targeted with minimal access to food.

Karonga District Council’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Isaac Mkandawire, commended DFID for the program saying it has come at the right time when some families are food insecure due to the 2017 floods.

Over 50, 000 people were affected by the flush floods between March and April this year.
