Thyolo, February 24: The education of over 4000 children from 58 Community Based Childcare Centres (CBCCs) in Thyolo is in limbo following the streak of stormy weather which has destroyed their learning structures.
According to a report compiled by Thyolo Social Welfare office, 4313 pre-school children from 58 CBCCs are no longer attending their lessons as the heavy rains which have fallen in the past two weeks in the district have destroyed their shelters and some play ground materials.
The report which was compiled in the week beginning February 18, has indicated that CBCCs from across the district have been affected and the District Social Welfare Officer, Grace Mvula confirmed the destruction.
“The rains have indeed destroyed the CBCCs and in some areas where we use churches as centres they are worst hit because the building materials are not of a good standard and they fall easily with the heavy rains,” said Mvula.
But Mvula added that the reports are still coming in and they hope after compiling them all they will do another assessment to see the extent of the destruction and see what action may be taken.
Just last month over 1000 households lost houses to the same rains but the victims have not been assisted with any relief items.
