Chiradzulu parents urged to lead in promoting reading culture

Chiradzulu, November 20, 2017: Parents in Chiradzulu have been advised to take a leading role in assisting their standard 1 to 4 children how to read and write as a way of promoting a reading culture in the country.

National Reading Programme (NRP) District Coordinator, Yamikani Chingwalu, told Malawi News Agency (MANA) Monday that parents were expected to encourage their children to read at home by among other things, ensuring that learners are given time to study.

“Parents are also encouraged to read together with their children. To make reading easier, they can also create community stories for their children to read in reading centres or even become volunteer reading teachers in reading centres themselves,” said Chingwalu.

He cited one way that parents could use to check if their children have time to read, such as checking if the child has a Learner’s Book when going and coming from school or even finding a reading partner for their child for them to be assisting each other.
“They can even ask their child to read a story aloud and at the end ask them what the story is all about,” he said.  

Commenting on the development, Mary Banda, a parent of a standard 2 pupil in the district, welcomed the coordinator’s sentiments saying she already assists her child to do his homework.

She said she would take up the advice to read together with her child saying this would help her son to learn how to pronounce some difficult words and also continue working hard at school.

Taking her turn, Mervin Pondani, another parent of a primary school pupil, said the introduction of the NRP was bringing to light the huge responsibility that parents have in ensuring that their children do well at school.

He said when children embrace the reading culture at primary school, they would not have problems with working hard in school in future, hence the chance to have a brighter future.

The NRP, which is in its second phase, is a five year program being financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
