Lilongwe, March 28, 2017: A 41 year-old man on Wednesday drowned in Namitete River in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula told the Malawi News Agency on Monday that the man who was working at Gala Estate went to Kachigunda village where he was drinking beer and died as he was going back home.

“It started raining heavily while he was drinking and his colleagues advised him not to go back home but he insisted. He drowned as he tried to cross the river since it was flooded,” he said.

Dandaula said the deceased body was found on Sunday, March 26, 2017 floating in Namitete River and postmortem conducted by Chileka Health Centre medical practitioners revealed that death was due to suffocation.

He said Police have identified the person as Benson Chafera from Chikusa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalolo in Lilongwe.

The Police are advising members of the general public to avoid crossing rivers or streams when they are full during the rainy season.
