Mzuzu, March 24, 2019: Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) has intensified certification of heavy goods vehicles, industrial and construction machineries safety of operators

The Department has indicated that heavy machines and vehicles pose serious safety threats to their operators hence the need for the machines and vehicles to undergo checks and certification by DRTSS.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency on Saturday in Mzuzu,DRTSS Northern Region Principal Traffic Officer, Joseph Chisamba said the department has so far visited some industries for the exercise.

“As a department, we are interested in ensuring that the safety of operators of such machines and vehicles is not compromised.
“We want industries to be using machines that are well secured in terms of safety,”  he said.

Chisamba said the process would ensure that all heavy machines and vehicles are certified and insured so operators are well covered in case of accidents.

“In the past we have had some cases where machine operators or drivers have been injured while using such machines but since some were not certified and had no insurance cover, it was difficult for the industries to compensate the victims.

“With the introduction of these intensive checks, I hope this will be very crucial in providing safety to the operators,” he said.

According to Chisamba, the Department has already conducted certification exercises at Dwangwa Sugar Corporation among others.

An ex Bomag Operator for Strabag Construction Company, Aaron Mkanganya commended  DRTSS for intensifying the exercise saying it  would help operators and drivers to be covered with insurance in case of accidents while on duty.

“Of course we have some companies that offer these insurance packages, but again we also have some cases where drivers and operators have complained of not being compensated after being injured while on duty. I hope this will help us a lot,” he said.
